Tiny Products are about to explode on the market.
The barriers to building them are now entirely removed.
Can’t code? ChatGPT can for you. Can’t write marketing copy? WriteSonic has you covered. Don’t know how to draw a logo? Choose from 2M assets at Freepik.
There’s simply no barriers whatsoever anymore. But that also means you are now competing with absolutely everyone on the internet instead of just people in your niche.
Why I think tiny products are interesting and worth your time right now is this idea that you can have your full time job and salary, then run a couple of side-hustles on the side without spending any time on them moving forwards. Kind of like a good share that pays dividends.
So what is a tiny product?
1. take two weeks to build
2. generate income and
3. require zero ongoing maintenance.
I first came across this term on a Ben Issen blog post. I guess ‘tiny product’ is a better way of describing a side hustle if we are specifically talking about digital services and apps. Ben’s article is great and he goes in-depth on the reasons why tiny products are killer but he’s more of a product builder and I consider myself to be a marketer first, so I have different thoughts on this topic.
Think about Marketing FIRST
Marketing is fucking wild in 2025. There is just so many channels, and I think if you want to truly create a tiny product without maintenance you need to research the channel your audience is on and adapt your product to that before even starting. Maybe even pigeon-hole yourself in to one channel just to make it truly no-maintenance. Let me explain…
In 2020 I made a tiny product called Sales Tax USA. I was having an annoying time getting WooCommerce Services to provide automated sales tax for my US client’s Wordpress websites. Their automated rates would hang or add 12 seconds to the checkout load time. I thought I would just download the tax rates and upload them to my database so it would load instantly. Turns out this is a nightmare and US sales tax is just the wildest system imagineable. Australia: 1 tax rate; EU : 1 tax rate per country; USA: +42,000 individual tax rates combining state, city, county & special rates… haha.
2 weeks of learning Python later I have a script that pulls the rates from all 50 states’ Government rate charts and populates it in to a CSV that I sell to Wordpress users all over the USA.
Now, before I started I thought about how to market this and I realised I couldn’t afford to spend anything on paid ads because as soon as you mention “tax” you are competing with TaxJar and huge tax corporations with million dollar budgets and your ad clicks are $25-35 per click, more than my product is worth. I also don’t think people want to think about tax on social media. So that leaves me with SEO. This is a marketing tool I’m passionate about so I wanted to make that my only aquisition channel; the website is built to specifically capture the users searching for “CSV” files of sales tax rates. SEO is great in the sense that once you rank #1-3, you really don’t need to do any more work. After an initial 1 week of heavy lifting building backlinks and optimising my blog posts; I’ve left the site untouched for 2 years and it still ranks really nicely and brings in $2K revenue monthly without any input from me.
To pull off a tiny product, you should find a marketing channel you can do in your sleep. Paid ads is fine as long you have the budget to support it from your product revenue.
Tiny Products in Production
Here’s some tiny products I have already rolled out or are in the process of launching:
- Wine Vybe is a large database of alcoholic beverage datasets. Apparently, it’s the worlds biggest beer database that’s publically available. I sell the data through an API and do zero marketing whatsoever apart from initial SEO to setup the products in the first place. The data comes from publically available manufacturer websites.
- Sales Tax USA is a downloaded CSV of all sales tax rates in the US. There’s +42,000 individual rates if you are wondering. The CSV is updated quarterly and it’s sold as a yearly subscription. It currently does $2K MRR with no marketing whatsoever and the only maintenance is running the tax collection python script to get the new rates.
- BasedAPI is a collection of APIs for creators who are building new apps and services. I add a new API dataset each month, but otherwise do no marketing. It took 3 days to build and about a week to collect the datasets for the APIs.
- Startup Heroes is a startup directory and dataset of new companies launching on the market. It’s $10 to list a startup and the data I collect I sell through APIs on BasedAPI.
I see tiny products exploding in 2025. What are you building next?
