Carbon & Fingers: Not a tasty cocktail!

By | Lifestyle | 2 Comments

If you hang around with carbon products a lot, sooner or later you are going to get a carbon splinter. Sometimes they can be big, sometimes they can be really small – unfortunately, more consistently, they usually hurt: A LOT!

What you do next is up to you … but let it be said to “not let the sun go down on an embedded carbon shard”

This is a story of one of those such days. It started off like any other day; 15-18 knots cross-shore at the lake where we train. Rigging 10.7m to get a few km’s in on the formula kit before we try a few runs on the light wind slalom kit. I have a few 530cm masts. I have few because I’m told they break a lot, however I’ve been lucky and only broken less than 3 masts in 5 years of sailing NP gear and so the particular mast I pulled out was pretty old and starting to peel at the ferrell. When the wind is blowing you just want to get out on the water as quick as possible so I was a little careless putting the mast together and feeling a sharp pain in my finger I pulled back to see a 5cm piece of carbon jutting out from my middle finger.

The big change: Gaastra Sails

Gaastra
As the 2007 European Pro Season starts to warm up, Sean announces after a strong 5-year partnership, he will no longer be riding Neil-Pryde sails and has joined the Gaastra Team for 2007.

With the help of fellow Australian and 2x Formula World Champion Steve Allen, Sean made the decision shortly after arriving in Europe to begin the first of his RS:X Olympic Events in Holland. With many World Titles already under their belt, including the current Formula World Title, Gaastra Sails are the ones to beat this season and Sean is looking forward to big possibilities on the new sails…

Sean would like to take this opportunity to thank Neil-Pryde for all their support and guidance over the last 5 years, which have no doubt contributed immensely to Sean’s results and status as Australia’s #1 racer. Whilst being sad to leave such a strong and performance driven brand, Sean is looking forward to the opportunities and challenges a new sail sponsor will bring. Look out for Sean riding Gaastra Sails at all the 2007 European Race Events.

Sean wins the Return of the Super-8

Super-8
The return of the Neil-Pryde Super-8 Slalom was hosted in the Netherlands last Sunday and featured some of the world’s best slalom sailors such as Micah Buzianis (US-34) . Despite the lousy forecast, nine races were held in light-wind slalom conditions. On Saturday the competition took off at 1:00pm, with 7 heats followed by a further 2 on Sunday. Saturday finished with a BBQ followed by a party hosted by Red Bull and Neil-Pryde.

Sean took 4 bullets over the 9 races to win the overall event. He used his iSonic 135 (courtesy of Markus Bouman) and Neil-Pryde RS:X 9.5m sail. Despite its 2 cams and small luff-pocket, the RS:X sail is quite quick off the wind …

Windsurfing at Night
What do you do when there’s not enough hours in the day to go windsurfing ?? You start training at night…

Sean and his French training partner Julien Savina (FRA-157) begin an early evening session with QLD High Performance coach Adrian Finglas, at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. With only two weeks to go before Sean leaves for Europe to begin the first phase of his Olympic campaign, Sean is training daily with Julien and Adrian. Julien is living in Brisbane for the next year and has been a member of the French Olympic Team training squad for quite a few years on the Mistral class.

When they’re not sailing, you can find Sean and Julien up and along Mt Coot-tha/Nebo on the roadbikes, getting in some miles before work starts each morning.

Sean stands alongside other elite Australian gymnasts, rowers and track & field athletes in the team and is proud to announce Blackberry as a sponsorship partner for the 2007 season. You can view the team’s Official Website at www.team-aus.com.au and also checkout their 2007 sporting campaigns.

Overall Season Champion in NSW

By | Australia, Events, Formula | One Comment

The 2006/07 NSW Racing Series finished with a bang last weekend at the final racing event at Hawks Nest. In a strong position for most of the season, Sean won the last three out of four races for the season, leaving him overall champion for the season. This title had been something Sean had been trying to win for a number of seasons, but due to his international commitments and the distances he had to drive to get to the events in NSW he had been suffering the consequences of missing events; this year was different however.

This last event in Hawks Nest also marked the first trial of a new “head-cam” worn by Sean in two of the races. Some footage of this will be available in the Media section of this website very soon … Checkout www.storm-riders.com.au for all the results and photos from the entire NSW Racing Series.

Sean continues his Australian dominance in Formula this season by taking out the New South Wales State Formula Championships at Botany Bay, Sydney yesterday. After 8 races in perfect 15 knot breezes, Sean finished the regatta with 5 bullets under his belt closely followed by Sam Parker (AUS-3) who pipped Brett Morris (AUS-080) for 2nd place after winning the final race of the event.

This has capped off a great Summer racing Season for Sean with two National Titles and two State Titles under his belt; making him the undisputed #1 racing class windsurfer in Australia. You can view the full results and coverage on www.storm-riders.com.au.

Sean finished the 2007 Sail Melbourne Regatta as 1st placed Australian, giving him the Australian Title for the RS:X Olympic Class.
